Police succeed in thwarting smuggling 3.726 birds to the island of Java

Market demand for ornamental birds, especially groups of chirping birds, makes hunting in the wild still going on. This causes a decrease in population and even the extinction of various types of birds every year. In their natural habitat, Birds have a very important role for forest regeneration such as flower pollinators, helps spread the seeds, and add nutrients to the soil through the production of manure. As part of the balance of the ecosystem, Birds are also predators of various types of insects as well as reptiles and small mammals. Nevertheless, trade, both small and large scale, continues to be carried out.

The Lampung Police thwarts the smuggling of thousands of birds

Lampung Regional Police joint unit, Flight Protecting Indonesia’s Bird, and the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) managed to thwart smuggling attempts around 3.726 protected and unprotected bird tails. The arrests were made on Monday (21/6) on follow-up information from the community. Thousands of these birds will be smuggled to the island of Java through Bakauheni Port, South Lampung. The birds were packed using baskets and boxes which were transported using a truck with the police number BE 8732 GP. When about to be fired, The truck continues to drive past the officers, so there's a chase. Until finally the truck stopped and a search was carried out. Of the total 3.726 confiscated bird's tail, 36 Among them are protected bird species, namely parrots, chili, cicadaun, blue winged cicadaun, big cicadaun, red neck honey bird and scared of the tutut.

Meanwhile, the truck driver and assistant with the initials BA (37) and BG (22) known to the people of Central Lampung, currently still under investigation by investigators from Sub-Directorate IV of the Ditkrimsus Polda Lampung. When proven to violate the Law number 5 year 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems, then the two perpetrators will be charged with Article 21 verse 2 Junto Article 40 Verse 2 with the threat of imprisonment 5 year and a fine of IDR 100 million.

Furthermore, the protected birds will be rehabilitated by a team from the animal rescue center regulated by the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) Region III Bengkulu – Lampung. Meanwhile, unprotected bird species will be released into the Community Forest Park (Tahura) Wan Abdul Rahman, Bandar Lampung City.
